Have you listened to your car lately? When you expect to hear that purring sound, is there suddenly a roar and a clank? Is your check engine light always on? It sounds like the problem is in your muffler or exhaust system.

So where do you go? It seems like there are muffler shops on every corner, so choosing one can be a problem. You want to find a garage that will repair everything without trying to replace things you may not actually need. So what can you do to find the right mechanic to fix your muffler and exhaust system?

Muffler and exhaust system repair requires specific equipment and parts to do properly. It requires full welding capabilities and the ability to saw and bend pipes. Your exhaust system is an essential part of the way your engine works. The proper diagnostic equipment is essential. Aside from removing the exhaust from your vehicle and muffling the sound of your engine, the entire system of air intake, engine performance, and timing are dependent upon a fully functioning system.

Find a mechanic you can trust - If you already have a regular servicer you know you can trust, you probably aren't reading this article. A mechanic you have a relationship with will usually be able to do the muffler repair for you, or if they don't do muffler repair, they will be able to refer you to someone who can.

But if you're reading this, you're probably starting from scratch. Here are the options and some pros and cons for these choices.

Take your car to the dealer - Virtually every automobile dealer comes equipped with a service department. The service department at the dealership where you bought your car will have the advantage of knowing your vehicle model and they are likely to have the parts available. The primary disadvantage of using the dealership is usually price. They will tend to charge a higher price than most other shops or garages. Another drawback is that dealerships may not do muffler work, preferring to outsource those to specialists.

National chains - There are a number of national chain organizations specializing in muffler repair and service. Many of these repair depots are quite good and have the proper equipment and know how to repair your exhaust system at an affordable price. However, the disadvantage to these chains is the same as a local service center. The quality of work can vary from shop to shop and you are as likely to find an incompetent repairman as you are a competent one.

Local servicers and chains - Your local area will have a variety of servicers, single shops or a small area chain, who may do general service work, or specialize in muffler service. They may be good or bad, prices may vary and you may find a great servicer who you will go to repeatedly, or a shop with incompetent or unethical practices.

Ask your friends and family who they know and trust. Check the internet and look for reviews. And make certain your repairer is ASE-certified.
