Five Home Services Every Modern Household Should Have

Whether you're thinking of moving into a new house or you simply want to bring your current home into the 21st century - and be well prepared for the coming years - , there are certain services that every household should have.

And whilst this list of services is likely to change every few years as technology develops, the following services are all considered to be the five which every modern household should have.

1. High Definition TV - the TV market is one of the fastest moving of any home service and this can be seen by just how far TVs have come over the last decade in particular.

If you were looking to buy a TV before the turn of the last millennium, you'll have had a pretty limited choice on actual technology - unless you were looking at the higher end of the market - and your choice would be based largely on aesthetics.

Look today, however and you have the standard colour televisions, varying degrees of High Definition and now 3D televisions are becoming increasingly popular - and that's without taking into consideration the vast amount of different sizes and integrated services that you can choose from.

And although 3D television is the most modern option, you'll be safe with a HD television, as the 3D option is still in its infancy and isn't expected to be in the affordable mainstream for at least two years.

2. Broadband internet - like televisions, the internet has come on leaps and bounds over the past decade and whilst in the late 1990s the most popular connection was a 56kpbs modem, today, most take the term internet to automatically mean broadband.

An option that is considerably faster than the original 56kbps connection, broadband internet has dropped massively in price over the last few years and it's now possible to get a subscription for less than five pounds a month.

3. Hard drive recorder - if you've taken out a satellite or cable television subscription in the last year or two, chances are you've already got a hard drive recorder. If you haven't got one, however, you really need to consider investing in one.

Allowing you to ditch all of your VHS tapes, hard drive recorders mean that you can record a program by simply pressing a single button. Fast, efficient and particularly space saving, they are a fantastic invention that will eventually allow you to store masses upon masses of programs and media in one piece of technology.

4. Wireless alarm - every house should have a burglar alarm installed, if not just for the fact that it acts as a deterrent even when off.

With the development of alarms, however, when you next have one installed, it's advised that you go for a wireless version, as they are so much more convenient.

For example, as you can purchase key fobs to go with them, it stops that rush when you're leaving or entering the house, as you can set or deactivate the alarm without actually being in the property.

5. Renewable energy source - as gas and electricity prices continue to rise, it's becoming more and more popular for people to take advantage of renewable energy sources.

And whilst solar panels are the most popular option, they are also the most costly and therefore it's worthwhile considering options such as certain high end boilers, which whilst pumping water around your home, use the energy that's created doing so to produce electricity for your home.
