For many people, a cell phone is no longer just a means to make a phone call. Many smart phones, like the iphone, have evolved the technology to essentially be a pocket sized tether to the internet. No matter where you are and what you're doing you are only one click away from being online and connecting in completely new ways. Taking this concept even further many software engineers are developing iphone apps that act as shortcuts for certain phone actions. Want to find a restaurant near you? There's an app for that. Want to find the quickest route to wherever you are going? There is an app for that.

These applications exist to make life easier and for many people, they do. That is not to say they are merely functional. Many apps are purely fun and there are many downloadable games that allow users to turn something mundane, like waiting at the doctor's office or in a long line fun by playing games - phones are truly informational and entertainment portals.

So what if you want to get involved in this business? Indeed there are perks to developing iphone apps as there is no overhead and fairly simple transaction. Not every idea makes a good application, however, so here are some things to consider if you want to get into this business.

The simple question is what is your idea? Is it truly unique? Does it offer a service that presently isn't being offered, or you offer it better? Maybe you don't have any ideas that can provide services, but there is also the niche market of comedy. Is your idea funny? If you answer yes to any of these questions, there is one more to consider and that is the interactivity of your application.

Having something staid will lose the interest of many people but if your app jumps out of the screen and requires a customer to put some effort into it then you have a good chance of having a genuinely good job. The requirement of Apple does put some preliminary requirements on you before entering a program for consideration.

You will have to sign on to the Apple iphone developer program for a fee and this does not guarantee that anything you submit will be selected for sale. Also, and this is to cover your own basis, you will have to prepare a non-disclosure agreement. There are many examples of these documents online that can help you draft your own version.

Now that you're ready to take it to the next step, put your team together. Now you may be one of the rare people that can have an idea and take it all the way through coding, but these individuals are few and far between.

If you have a good idea write down every aspect of it that you can think of. Sitting down with an engineer they will have be able to transform your thoughts into a workable program and bring things to the table that you wouldn't think of.

Do some testing with family and friends and work out any bugs. Next you will submit your program for sale with the hope that you have created the next blockbuster phone application. Good luck!
