Let's face it, when encountered with a plumbing problem most of us tend to wonder: "Do I really need a plumber?" We have all heard of disaster stories involving DIY gone wrong, and when it comes to your plumbing, most of the time it is safe to say that, it's worthwhile hiring a professional. Of course, if you have a minor problem such a slightly blocked sink, this is easily fixed with a simple tool such as plunger. But if you find that the issue you are dealing with requires more technical knowledge, then this is the time to consult a qualified plumber. So when do you really need to call on a helping hand?

Typical Tasks That Might Require a Plumber

Let's start with the basics, obviously plumbers work with fittings involving water supply, such as connecting internal plumbing to external fixtures, for example sinks showers and washing machines. Meaning that, you are most likely to need professional help when something goes wrong in your bathroom or kitchen. So, let's firstly look at common problems that require a bathroom plumber.

When Things Go Wrong In Your Bathroom

The bathroom is full of potential plumbing problems, be it the toilet, shower/bath or sink. Perhaps you noticed a foul smell coming from the drain, or your toilet is blocked, here are the most common problems requiring a bathroom plumber.

* Blocked toilet- this problem generally occurs when build-up of waste matter is blocking the pipes. The result is slow drainage of water or no drainage when the toilet is flushed- probably a good time to pick up the phone and get someone to have a look at your plumbing.

* Foul Odours- the main cause of undesirable smells is generally a burst pipe, or defective wax ring. This would definitely be a job for the professionals!

* Shower leaks- shower leeks occur when the shower is malfunctioning, meaning less water comes out of the shower head and more out of the hose. Depending on the shower fitting (electric or standard), the bathroom plumber may need to re-install a new shower, or repair the existing one.

* Low Water Pressure- that annoying issue of your shower producing a dribble of water instead of a burst is most likely the result of defective parts or faulty installation- you guessed it, it's time for a qualified professional.

Common Problems in the Kitchen

You are most likely to encounter problems with your kitchen plumbing involving your sink, washing machine or dish washer. Perhaps your washing machine is leaking and you are finding large puddles on your kitchen floor. The most likely problems to be encountered in your kitchen are as follows:

* Clogged Up Kitchen Sink- this may be a minor issue that your plunger will fix. However, you may also encounter this problem if your pipes are rusty, or the drain pipes are blocked. Rather than second guessing the issue, it is a good idea to seek professional advice.

* Leaking Washing Machine or Dish Washer- this problem is most likely to do with the installation of the appliance and how it is connected to the water supply. Unless you are fully familiar with the workings of the water supply, check out you kitchen plumbing!

Other Strange Plumbing Phenomena

Having discussed the most frequently encountered bathroom and kitchen plumbing problems, let us look at some other issues that would require a professional hand.

You may be familiar with that odd whistling sound coming out when you turn on your shower or tap. Most likely, this is due to a faulty valve, or residue built up within the pipes.

If you are finding that dirty water comes out of your taps, it is probable that your pipes are filled with rust, dirt or other harmful matter.

More serious flooding than a puddle is most likely due to a seriously burst pipe- this would be an emergency job!

While it may be tempting to pursue such problems yourself, it is far better to put your trust in someone reputable. It may seem like a fun challenge, or an easy job, however you may end up with more than you bargained for. Unless you are sure of your capabilities it's probably best to avoid further costs and perhaps some unnecessary embarrassment! So if you are thinking of rolling up those sleeves, ask your self if it might be better to pick up the phone and call a plumber!
