When the economy is tough, and people begin to cut nonessentials from their budgets, they might consider a visit to a beauty salon a luxury item they can ill afford. Clearly, they haven't thought through the benefits and advantages of budgeting for a trip to the salon. This is not an indulgence; a good salon with a reliable hairstylist can be a lifeline that helps people navigate through difficult times.
Hair salons have long been an escape for women. A place where they could go spend an hour or two just relaxing and letting someone pamper them for a change. That they came out of the salon looking better than when they went in might seem like a given. That was the whole purpose of the visit, wasn't it? Of course, women want to look nice when they leave the salon, but in reality the time spent in the salon is much more than a new hairstyle or brightly colored fingernails...a salon is therapy for the soul.
The salon is the place we can let our hair down (so to speak). We can forget about the laundry and the vacuuming for a while and just relax. We can talk freely about our hopes and dreams and know that we have the attention and compassionate ear of our stylists. We can enjoy the camaraderie that comes from sharing time with other women and not feel guilty for letting our time here be "all about me."
So you might think men are left on the sidelines when it comes to the many benefits of the hair salon. Not so! ...salons are no longer just a haven for women; men have discovered the pure relaxation and comfort that can be gained from a day at the salon and are coming in droves. Treatments that were once considered strictly for women such as hair coloring, pedicures, and facials, are now highly sought-after by many discerning men.
So how does a day of relaxation and pampering translate to a necessity? I mean after all, you have a friend, or relative, or acquaintance that was a hairdresser once and he/she has offered to do your hair free of charge. Why pay a salon? Think about it...looking and feeling your best is a great energizer. When you look good and feel good, you perform better, you stand straighter, and you exude confidence in yourself. All these traits can be seen by employers, clients, or potential hiring managers. It's hard to get a job when you look like you need a job; so a good basic haircut, clean, well-tended nails, and a relaxed demeanor are all solid investments. Well-meaning friends and relatives aren't going to workshops and conventions to stay on top of the newest styles and products; they aren't getting the practice that allows them to keep their skills optimized; and it's hard to maintain a good relationship with someone who has just ruined your hair. A good stylist is a professional providing the services that the salon has to offer, and he/she is a great listener and confidante as well. Best of all, you are number one when you are in the chair and that's a very, very special feeling.
