Antarctica is a Few Hours Away

Though the passengers don't notice, the compass needle wobbles as the plane flies over the Magnetic South Pole. They are traveling over Antarctica on a one-day tour.

Many meters beneath the comfortable passengers, the ice sheet has been etched into wave-like patterns by a relentlessly blowing polar wind as it heads out to sea.

From the airplane windows, passengers can clearly see the snow being blown by the brisk winds. It billows like steam over the glacier below.

Traveling over 2,030 kilometers to reach the South Magnetic Pole in 1909, took the first explorers 134 days.

They meticulously trod through the deadly ice. Passengers on this flight reached the Magnetic South Pole four hours after having left.

They were able to enjoy a round trip flight that spent many hours over Antarctica.

The south pole is amazing, not just for it's vast and barren wilderness but also for the scientific properties it holds due to it's strong magnetic forces that can cause all sorts of interesting changes to instrumentation.

Staying on course is easy for the jet because it has satellite guidance, as well as a gyroscope. The actual South Pole, where many countries tried to lay claim to in the early 20th century, is around 2500 kilometers away from the locale where you will be visiting.

There is a similarity between this jetliner's passengers, and the well known American aviator, who in the 1920s, bragged that he flew the inaugural flight over the North and South Poles, and he never even had to stand up to reach his objective.

Barely separated from the passengers, the Antarctic winds rocket frigidly past.

But, the cabin inside the plane is perfect, so you can easily travel to the Antarctic in jeans, a t-shirt and flip-flops, if you wanted to! By the time the jumbo jet was roughly three hours south of the first icebergs could be seen and a party atmosphere took over on the plane.

Tourists of all ages now clamor for the best places to view the icebergs from the plane windows.

As they come closer they can see a jigsaw puzzle made up of jagged geometrical shaped icebergs as they near the coast of Antarctic, as if someone randomly dropped white mirror shards on to a blue-black background that is the sea.

Some passengers take photos and shoot videos from the cabin windows, while others just sit in awe and enjoy the inspiration view of the floating bodies down below in the sea.

After this, they were inspired by the views the Trans Antarctic Mountains offered, as well as the splendor of the starkly white ice caps and their blue highlights.

While flight travel is not new to the Antarctic, it has not been until recently that interest has really made travel a viable and profitable experience.

You should expect to see mountains, coastlines, bergs and wildlife as you make your way over the Antarctic.

And you should also get a good view of one of the many different research bases that dot the area. That base in particular is a close distance to the South Pole which was discovered by researchers.
