The hilarious Dane Cook is best-known for his signature brand of deprecating comedy, but the renowned funnyman and budding actor has expanded his repertoire even more than just dabbling in films. Announced in mid-November, Cook will lead the cast for the upcoming Broadway debut of the Neil LaBute production "Fat Pig," joining Josh Hamilton on the big stage in starring roles.
"Fat Pig" tells a story of a young man (Hamilton) who falls in love with an overweight woman while being ridiculed by his friend (Cook). Lead female roles haven't yet been announced for the Broadway rendition, but with an all-star cast of Dane Cook and Josh Hamilton leading the way, "Fat Pig" is sure to draw in some big names for the production that's slated for a spring 2011 arrival.
The play premiered Off-Broadway in 2004 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre and roped in some A-list talent for its initial run. Featured actors and actresses in the previous Off-Broadway run of "Fat Pig" included Jeremy Piven, Keri Russell, Andrew McCarthy and Ashlie Atkinson.
Playwright and director Neil LaBute offered a statement to Playbill.com regarding the upcoming transfer of "Fat Pig" to the Broadway stage. He said, "I'm also extremely eager to get into rehearsal with Dane and Josh. The ability to cater to your actors is a luxury that comes with being both writer and director. I'm planning on writing new material for this production to enhance the already considerable gifts that these men bring to the characters. I'm very much looking forward to this opportunity to see 'Fat Pig' through fresh eyes."
While "Fat Pig" will mark Dane Cook's debut in the wide world of Broadway, it isn't his first rendezvous with acting. The applauded comedian gained traction as an actor in films like "Employee of the Month," "Good Luck Chuck," "My Best Friend's Girl," "Dan in Real Life" and "Mr. Brooks," and his acting comes second to his stand-up comedy career.
The versatile entertainment guru has recently sold movie tickets for his film credits, but he's been selling out Dane Cook tickets to his stand-up comedy performances since the mid-1990s. Cook scored his big break in the late '90s, when he appeared on Comedy Central as a stand-up comedian, and he quickly became a well-known performer on the comedy circuit thereafter.
Cook's debut comedy release Harmful If Swallowed dropped in 2003, going gold after pushing more than 450,000 copies in less than two years. Appearances on comedy shows such as "The Man Show," "Crank Yankers" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" only furthered his mainstay status in the industry, and before long Dane Cook was a household name.
Now with a slew of released CD/DVDs under his belt, Dane Cook is further exploring his options in the entertainment industry. No matter how well-known he becomes as a film and/or stage actor, however, the funny guy will always be best-known as a stand-up comedian. Cook has recently been on tour with his Global Thermo Comedy Tour, and he's still performing his stinging comedy routine at venues across the country.
