There are a number of advantages that LASIK eye surgery can bring to people who have moderate to low vision problems. There are a number of people who are constantly wondering if LASIK eye surgery can help them, and they head to their optometrist in order to find out if they're a candidate. But there are some things that you should know about before you look to get this type of surgery. While it is a good idea for many people, it is not a good idea for everyone, which is why, before you head to the optometrists office, you need to make sure that you know the basics about LASIK.

What Is It?

What, exactly, is LASIK? It's a way of shaving down a part of the eye so that you can focus correctly. When you look out of your eye, there are a number of pieces that are necessary to see out of your eye accurately. If any part of the eye is not in line with the rest of the eye, or has something else wrong with it, you will not see right and will require corrective lenses in order to not find yourself squinting at everything. LASIK uses high tech machines in order to help your eye to be fixed correctly, without you needing corrective lenses.

No More Lenses

The common assumption is that LASIK surgery completely eliminates the need for corrective lenses. The unfortunate truth is that while most people will not find that they need to have glasses, there are some people who will find, as they grow older, that they need some help with seeing. This is because the eye is always changing as we grow older, and people who have had LASIK could eventually find that their eyesight starts to become worse as they grow a bit older. This doesn't mean that you're guaranteed to need glasses if you get LASIK, but it does mean that you may not always be without glasses.

Insurance

Another problem that many run into is insurance. We tend to use insurance to help us to pay for medical needs, but LASIK eye surgery isn't considered to be a medical need, and is, instead, considered to be an elective surgery. That means that your insurance likely won't cover it. There are a few insurances which do cover part of the cost, but most don't. Some employers actually offer a special deal for their employees who want to get LASIK, so make sure that you double-check with your employer before you opt to get the surgery.

Time Off

Another thing that many people don't know is that you will need to take some time off after having LASIK surgery. Most patients are only out for two or three days, but those are two to three days that you need to make sure that you have covered, so definitely plan on being out of work for a time. LASIK can change your life, that's true, but make sure that you know all about how it works before you get the surgery.
