Liposuction: A Diet Alternative or a Serious Surgical Procedure?

In a world where various plastic surgeries are widespread among both young and old, it is not surprising that some view certain procedures as alternative options to a different, often more expensive, treatment. But, while some treatments are only topical solutions while others are a bit more invasive, does every single candidate for a plastic surgery really know enough about the procedure to consider the benefits and drawbacks? Liposuction is one of the most often performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States, yet, most make a decision to undergo liposuction in hopes to shed extra fat and with that extra pounds.

Unfortunately, liposuction is not a viable alternative to an exercise regimen or a diet. It is not a procedure that is meant for weight loss, although, surprisingly, many patients report weight loss post-procedure. There are lots of reasons that can help explain this, but the most likely one is that the surgery doesn't just leave an imprint on one's physique, but also on a person's psyche. According to medical reports, many patients who had difficulty following strict diets or exercise saw improvement in their ability to maintain stable weight after the procedure. Once they were able to see themselves in a new light, they gained a measure confidence and were more motivated to keep the weight off.

Clearly, the end result of liposuction in these particular cases was not just a weight loss, but an improved sense of self-esteem, and that can be worth it for many. If that is the effect you are hoping for, you may be the right candidate for liposuction; but remember - if you are overweight or obese, you must first work on ridding yourself of extra fat till you are about 30 percent above your ideal weight. While this may not be easy, it will prepare you for the procedure and boost your determination to maintain its great results in the future.

How complex is liposuction from a surgical standpoint? Liposuction is one of the safest cosmetic procedures today. A surgeon simply inserts a hollow steel tube into a fat pocket and removes the fat with a vacuum. The fat is vacuumed out from underneath the skin. Traditional liposuction often requires blood transfusion prior to the surgery, and when considering liposuction you should be aware of all the risks associated with this process. Tumescent liposuction is a type of fat removing procedure that involves injecting IV fluid under the skin, which leaves an opening between the fat pocket and muscle tissue, allowing for the steel tube to move more easily and resulting in lesser blood loss for the patient.

As any other surgery, liposuction is not a risk-free procedure. Before moving ahead with liposuction, you should spend time choosing your surgeon and make sure that he or she explains all of the risks and complications to you in detail. Generally, you should be in good health when considering the procedure and any special condition (such as diabetes) should be discussed with your doctor. Also, it's important to note that most health insurance policies do not cover this procedure, so you must determine whether liposuction is financially feasible before scheduling your first visit with a plastic surgeon.
