Many people do not hesitate to spend huge amounts of money to improve their beauty and well-being. Some resort to cosmetic surgery while others put their faith in healthy lifestyle to look young and beautiful. Because of this, the cosmetic industry plays a significant part in the economy.

The aim of nutrigenomics is to incorporate nutrition in people's pursuit to beauty to maximize the benefit that comes from the product that they use. The most sought after products of the consumers contain anti-aging properties which they believe can slow down the deterioration of their tissues and skin cells. Antioxidants are known to lower the risk heart disease and cancer, reduce blood sugar, and slow the process of aging. They stop the harmful effects of free radicals to the body.

The reaction of free radicals and DNA that causes mutation is thought to be the cause cancers and weakening of cellular structures which lead to aging. Common antioxidants are vitamins A, C, and E and are usually found in foods like berries, broccoli, tomatoes, red grapes, garlic, spinach, tea, carrots, soy, and whole grains. Thus, including these foods in your diet can decrease the risk of metabolic disorders and will improve your health condition.

Anti-aging and antioxidant-based product available in the market comes in many forms: as supplements, vitamins, soap, lotion, cream, sunscreen, and many others. They are believed to repair skin cells and strengthen blood vessels. However, the hype over antioxidants has overshadowed their real benefits. Antioxidants cannot increase the elasticity of your skin and make your skin look younger, nor can they be used to replace any vitamin deficiency. They only slow down or prevent the oxidation of other molecules.

As we all know, everything that we eat and apply to our skin goes to our body and affects our genes, either in a good or bad way. Thus, eating the right nutrients improves our health and keeps our genes from mutating. However, taking in the wrong nutrients have the opposite effects. Thus, knowing what our body specifically needs is important. Nutrigenomics aims to produce functional food by understanding the effect of food and health foods to our body, which in result also affects our beauty and wellness.

With the help of genomic testing, nutritionists will be able to identify the nutrients needed in the body and be able to formulate customized diet recommendations to them. Since people are concerned about the fast aging of their cells due to environment and genetic factors, incorporating foods rich in antioxidants in their diet will help improve their skin and body conditions.

However, it is important to determine the amount needed by the body since excess and lack of something always has bad effects in the body. Beauty and wellness are the results of good nutrition and health. Thus, treatment should not only be done outside but also inside of our body to optimize the benefits that we can get from what we eat or apply to our skin.

Genetic variability has an influence to the response of our body to the dietary factors introduced to our body. Hence, this aspect of our genetic makeup should be considered to increase the efficacy of the treatments. As of the present, further studies about nutrigenomics in relation to beauty and wellness are conducted for the advancement of its application to our daily life.
