Need to save money on your monthly bills? Check out these 10 ways to save on some of the most common regular outgoings.

1. Satellite or cable television - not a necessity but something that most people would count as one of their primary luxuries and something that they feel so strongly about having it may as well be a necessity, cut your satellite or cable television costs by opting for a Freeview package or utilizing the online television packages, such BBC iPlayer and Channel 4OD.

2. Broadband and home phone - the easiest way to save money on your broadband and home phone costs is to review them after every 12 month contract period. Head online, use comparison websites and you should be able to save yourself at least a small percentage each year.

3. Gas and electric - a necessary outgoing unless you're living in a full eco house, generally speaking, gas and electricity prices are relatively the same across the board, assuming you changed regularly.

However, you can ensure you save as much money as possible by taking out a provider's online option and providing regular and accurate meter readings.

4. Water - if you're paying a set amount for your water each month but have more bedrooms than people in your house, consider having a water meter installed, as chances are you'll be able to save around 100 pounds a year.

5. Groceries - the easiest way to save money on your grocery bill is to learn how to cook, as by understanding what foods work together and how to prepare some basic meals, you'll find you buy less on pre-packed, costly foods and more cheaper, individual ingredients.

6. Car fuel - when you have a car, you can become reliant upon it, using it for everything from necessary journeys such as getting to work right through to completely unnecessary trips to the local shop (as they're within waking distance).

Save on the amount of money that you spend on car fuel each month by simply thinking about each journey - is it necessary? Are there any other options? Can you double up with anyone else to spread the cost?

7. Entertainment - if you find you spend a set amount of money each month on going out, whether it's for a meal with friends or to the cinema, take into consideration alternative options.

You could have meals and parties round each other's houses, for example and most large cinemas offer discount monthly passes, which usually work out a more cost effective option if you go at least twice a month.

8. Mobile phones - if you're tied into a contract and are struggling to pay it, the best thing that you can do is to contact your carrier and simply explain your situation. Chances are they'll reduce your monthly amount somehow, whether it's by extending your contract or limiting your call and text allowance, as they'd rather receive some money from you than none at all.

9. Presents - if you're part of even a relatively small group of friends and have contact with a small amount of relatives, you'll find that you spend at least some money each month on presents and gifts.

To save money here, you need to plan in advance - buy in the sales at Christmas and summer and although it might mean you have to think ahead a few months, you could save yourself a small fortune.

10. Insurances - most insurances you pay out for won't be required by law, but you'll regret not having, for example, contents insurance if your home is burgled and you lose a lot of your possessions.

The various insurance polices can soon mount up, however and therefore it's important that rather than just accepting the first price you receive or your renewal price, you check out each policy in-depth, ensuring it provides you with just the right level of cover you need - not too little and not too much.
