Diabetes can occur at varied times of life and for a lot of people is a lifelong sickness. A colleague of mine recently died as a consequence of diabetes which most of us in the dept did not have any idea he had because he never talked about it. Whether the guy was too embarrassed to mention his condition because he did not want to be pitied or treated like an invalid, or whether he was unwilling to acknowledge its presence even to himself we'll never know.

Diabetes is classed as an acute condition for which there's no cure. In short, it's caused by elevated levels of glucose in the bloodstream. Under normal conditions, the body uses insulin to control blood glucose levels however in diabetes sufferers there is either a lack of insulin, or a resistance to insulin, or both. In other words, the pancreas either does not produce the necessary insulin for blood glucose control or their cells aren't receptive to the hormone insulin, or they suffer both of these problems together.

However, it's important to understand that not all individuals have exactly the same type of diabetes. There are actually 3 main types: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. The last mentioned commences in pregnancy and is triggered, amongst other things, by the existence of pregnancy hormones which hinder the functioning of insulin, thereby allowing blood sugar levels to escalate out of hand. Type 1, however, can start at any age although it frequently shows up in childhood or in the adolescent years. Type 2 is considered the most common kind of diabetes and typically manifests during adulthood although it's now beginning to appear in teens as a result of rising obesity rates in the younger generation. This second type is particularly dangerous because it is possible to live with it and never know you have it which could even have been the scenario with our unfortunate co-worker.

The depressing fact is that diabetes is oftentimes a killer illness, and the smartest thing that affected individuals can do apart from following doctor's instructions, is to inform themselves about the condition and to plan for the chance of disability and even passing away due to the condition. This preparation can be emotional, for instance, as in the sufferer coming to terms with the truth that they are afflicted with diabetes, and by making fiscal provisions by aacquiring some kind of life insurance. Certain lifestyle changes are also likely to be needed as a way to control the disease.

That being said, the significance of obtaining insurance cover as part of a strategy for coping with diabetes should not be underrated because it can afford the patient considerable peace of mind. Increasingly, the negative consequences of stress and worry are coming to be recognised as culprits in exacerbating disease therefore it makes a lot of sense to have insurance cover so that, at least, the patient won't have to fret about finances and the future. Moreover, there are insurance companies in existence that specialize in cover for diseases such as diabetes which is even better because the coverage is tailored specifically to the exigencies of the condition.
