With the passing of time, many of the old buildings that once lined Pearl Street have been restored bringing back the historical integrity of this charming town. This once mainly commercial street is now considered to be the heart and soul of the community. There are over 390 businesses located on or right off the mall which provide great commerce for the city. There are vintage clothing and jewelry shops, hippy-chic bookstores, and other shopping of all kinds. New concept restaurants, modern bars and grills, and traditional cuisines make up just a few of the 115 dining establishments that are nestled into every nook and cranny of Pearl Street. A few years back, Boulder was rated the "Foodiest Town In America" not only because of the vast variety of cuisine that is available, but also because of the food culture that has erupted out of Boulder.
Probably the most unique thing about Boulder's Pearl Street that sets it apart from the old days is the abundance of art and the sharing of cultures and ideas that takes place on the mall everyday. Nowadays street performers, musicians, artists, and poets display their art freely on the street and bringing with them a sense of something that was lost with the great beatniks that once occupied Boulder. Approximately 85% of the businesses that now occupy the mall are independently run and operated. The whimsical Boulder Creek sits merely a block or two from Pearl Street and brings life to the surrounding area with bright colorful flowers, rolling rapids, and scattered rock formations. A delectable local farmer's market runs every Wednesday and Saturday, weather permitting, which provides people with a means to support their local community.
The clean, welcoming and tranquil aspects of this community drive crowds and make Boulder's Pearl Street the perfect place to spend a day regardless if you are a visitor or a long time resident. On Friday nights the electricity that fills the college kids who occupy the local university, Colorado University at Boulder, can be seen all over town especially in the heart on Pearl Street. During major football games and the Pearl Street Stampede, black and gold can be seen as far the eye can see and merely reflects the love the residents have for the community. Also popular are the infamous pub crawls, costumed bike rides, ever present frat/sorority parties along with politically driven protests, and green ways of thinking that can be viewed on a daily basis. In general, modern day Pearl Street offers something for everyone and is a sure place to experience Colorado's unique culture.
