Thanksgiving is one of the most memorable holidays celebrated in the United States as most people enjoy watching football, spending time with their families and loved ones, and of course eating decadent food! For a lot of people, memories of mom's candied yams, green bean casserole, roasted turkey with pan gravy, and pumpkin pie come to mind when looking back at holidays of the past. These classic dishes have come to be customary in most households and although they are truly delicious, it is the opinion of this writer that it is time to reinvent some aspects of the classic Thanksgiving Day meal. When planning an event for a major holiday it is important to be realistic about your guest's expectations and to not bite off more than your can chew. Developing a new fun and exciting menu that incorporates classic flavors and ingredients is a great way to spice up your upcoming Thanksgiving dinner party without freaking out grandma and grandpa.
There are many other options available to serving the traditional roasted turkey. For example, some people serve ham, seafood, or pasta. However, if turkey is a must on your family's menu, here are a few different ways you should consider serving it. Try coming up with your own blend of savory spices and cook a rubbed roast turkey. Smokey, earthy or jerked flavors work incredible well with turkey especially coupled with a fresh orange juice, butter and white wine basting sauce. Bacon wrapped stuffed turkey breasts are also a great alternative and can be stuffed with just about anything, like kale and sausage or hazelnuts. Instead of serving a casserole, lemon spiced brussel sprouts or green beans with raisins and toasted almonds would be a new seasonal twist to a traditional dish. Cornbread stuffing is not out of the realm of classic Thanksgiving Day cuisines but by adding a few different ingredients like seafood stock, leeks, bacon and nuts you can create something new and exciting for your guests.
