So you've just walked across the stage and received that hallowed degree, now what? The last four years have instilled vital knowledge that will help you in your future career as an advertising, public relations or marketing professional, but there are some things that you probably didn't hear from your professors; or, if you did, you should hear again.

That degree doesn't mean that you know it all - integrated marketing communications continues to develop and change. New graduates have a lot to offer the industry as innovators in the digital age, but understand change and innovation can be hard rows to hoe. Keep up with industry trends as part of your new role. New industry trends and opportunities can help a client to stay ahead of the curve and competitors.

Awareness is just as important as ROI - The letters R-O-I seemed to reverberate in almost every class that I took in college as the bottom line. While it is very important, sometimes we can get lost in those letters and forget that there may be other metrics that cannot be tracked through numbers and stats.

Facebook is no longer just a way to "stalk" your friends - Although you've probably heard this mentioned before, it's worth stating again. Employers, clients and potential clients use Facebook and the like to scout exactly who you are. Be sure that your accounts have a professional reflection of you.

Deadlines still matter (especially when working in an agency setting) - In college, keeping a planner for the numerous projects, exams and presentations was crucial. Take your planner into your new role, as well. Juggling several clients can be overwhelming. By keeping a planner of the status of all of the projects and items, you can preserve a clear mind and make sure you do not miss a deadline.

All internships are valuable - Keep your eyes peeled and ears open as an intern. You will almost certainly learn some valuable information about the industry, office culture and day-to-day happenings, even if you are just shredding paper and fetching coffee. Be proactive in your role as an intern and other opportunities might arise.

Your degree is not a life-plan - You may have been unyielding in your desire to become the latest and greatest Communications Director for XYZ Company in university, but life can often steer you in a new direction. What might seem like an interim job on your path to your goal can quickly become your new passion. Be open-minded!

The education you received will certainly be a solid foundation for your career, but be sure to take your life as a college graduate in stride. There are so many opportunities to excel in advertising and communications, but you must be like a sponge and soak it all in to fully appreciate it.
