The toughest thing there is about having a garden is walking out to check on your plants and uncovering holes in all the plants that looked fine the last time you saw them. The devastation has typically been attributable to pests. Sometimes the damage may have been created by gophers, but the usual rascals are birds, worms and slugs, closely followed by snails and caterpillars.
You'll never be in a position to get rid of all of them, but you need to do something, because you don't want your hard work completely wasted. Creatures are a problem since they can conceal themselves under the soil, in weeds or piles of leaves. Your first line of attack should be to do away with their hiding places whenever possible. Get rid of the weeds, the old plant debris, and any decaying matter that the insects like to live in. You need to flip the soil on a regular basis, taking care to break up the clods. This will help eradicate any hiding places in the soil.
Dormant spray is one thing else you should use to minimize plant diseases and insect activity. February or March is a good time for this, mainly because then is the dormant period for plants. The dormant spray isn't going to be effective unless the instructions are thoroughly followed. When you do it wrong, you might be liable to kill off your entire garden. Keep in mind that there are also insects that benefit your garden, and these you want to keep. You can also find some of those winged invaders, the birds. A bird feeder could be an helpful substitute for the futile exercise of trying to scare them away. Birds typically choose a bird seed combination, which you can place in a feeder, and so doing you'll save your garden from pecking damage. Birds busy around a feeder will look and sound attractive, and ultimately this will likely also cost less than other solutions.
Having a dog could help, but only up to a point. Typically gophers can be a garden owner's headache. If your plants are fading, and you notice mounds of dirt, that could be your problem. These little critters certainly understand how to make a nuisance of themselves. With a length of between five and fourteen inches, gophers have small tails and can be black, brown or occasionaly white. It is possible to capture them with traps. To do this successfully you want to find their tunnels and choose the right position for the traps Smoke bombs triggered near the tunnel access and spreading throughout the tunnels will hopefully get the gophers.
To always keep your garden in good shape, you will need to get rid of all of your pests at the earliest opportunity. The longer they remain, the harder they're going to be to get rid of. A garden contributes to a house when you keep it up, and keep it in top shape.
