Insomnia and other related sleep disorders are a massive problem in the United States and across the world. It's believed that 40-50% of the US population suffer from some form of sleep condition. But why? Sleep is a natural process for all animals. Some blame the aging population, changes in lifestyle and habits, and also the rise in wight related problems and obesity. As a shift worker myself, I'm well aware of the problems this lifestyle can have on your sleep patterns.

But which sleep disorder do you have? There are upwards of 80 to choose from, each given it's own unique name and treatment plan. And anyone can suffer, at any time in their lives, so it's worth reading up on the problem, just in case it affects you.

Insomnia is one of those sleep disorders that is on the increase, and it leads to some major problems for sufferers. Daytime sleepiness, that never ending feeling of not having had enough sleep, and indeed, the dangers it can pose for driving, working with machinery, and general concentration are very real. In the US and Australia, tiredness is to blame for a large percentage of serious motor accidents, and these figures are likely to be reflected around the world. And who pays for the financial cost of these accidents? The taxpayers of course. And that is not considering the emotional cost for those that lose loved ones to sleep related accidents.

Many physical illnesses are directly related to a lack of sleep. Headaches, abdominal problems, diabetes and a range of cardiovascular problems are often attributed to sleep conditions. And your psychological well-being is definitely at risk if you don't get enough sleep. Depression and mood swings will make you feel bad, and not make others want to be around you either.

A lot of people don't give a sleeping problem the attention it deserves, relegating it to an inconvenience rather than a serious medical condition. But it is serious, and you should certainly be visiting your medical practitioner or healthcare professional if you have concerns. There are a lot of treatments out there that can cure or reduce sleep problems, and you owe it to yourself to get a good night sleep.

Depending on the sleep disorder you have, you will find a range of treatments to help you. CPAP machines, mouthpieces, special pillows, medications, sleep studies at sleep centers, and various other diagnostic tests can help you to get the right diagnosis and cure your insomnia problems sooner rather than later. You can often take home equipment that will monitor you whilst you sleep in your own bed.

No-one deserves to suffer from sleep deprivation. Uninterrupted sleep is your right and a vital necessity to your well-being. If you believe you ar a family member suffers from a sleep problem make an appointment with your physician as soon as possible. Help is available.
