Planning a wedding on a small budget does not mean everything has to be boring nor should it mean it has to be unsophisticated. In reality, there is no proof that hurling large piles of cash at your wedding will make it any more interesting than not doing so. With that being said, don't let the thought of planning your wedding on a small budget get you down -- there are plenty of ways to spend less while still guaranteeing a memorable & enjoyable experience for you and your family and friends.

1. Put a Lock on Your Invite List. More people means more food, more drinks, a lot more space (a lot more decorations as a result), much more cake, a lot more tables, additional chairs, more servers, and more of EVERYTHING ELSE. Invite only who you must invite; not the entire list of people the both of you have ever come into contact with. Don't forget, your planning a wedding on a small budget -- I.E. small budget, small invite list.

2. Get away from a formal meal with servers and/or specialized requests -- it's just too expensive. Take the self serve buffet choice and offer a broad selection of unique, low-cost food items. Not only will this enable guests to choose WHAT they eat, it allows them to determine WHEN they eat. People like options and a self serve buffet provides exactly that, options. If you THINK you can pay for a sit-down meal WITH variety when planning a wedding on a small budget, then go ahead and go for it. But, don't be surprised when the bill BLOWS UP in your face!

3. Keep Your Ego At the Door to Save Money on Decor. Ice statues, chocolate water fountains, huge chandeliers, personalized & engraved silverware, as well as antique vases and paintings DO NOT make weddings more pleasurable. All these things do is blow up your budget and make it harder for you to pay for the things that really matter. Stay with basic and low-cost wedding reception supplies if you'd like to be successful with planning a wedding on a small budget. Theme balloons, candles, ribbons & raffia, pictures & picture frames, decorative fruit bowls, theme colored table cloths & napkins, and whatever else you can get cheap from a wholesale dealer or party supply store. These things normally won't stress the budget and you could get a whole heck of a lot for a few hundred bucks.

4. Be Frugal With your Flowers! Flowers can be a true pain to take care of, particularly in terms of planning a wedding on a small budget. That said, stick by these guidelines: Don't buy flowers which are not in season. Seriously think about arranging the flowers on your own or by way of a friend. Use considerably less cut flowers and more assorted fruits. Think about getting away from expensive cut flowers and taking advantage of inexpensive flowering potted plants instead.

5. No Open Bar. It is not recommended for weddings on a small budget, no matter what you may have heard. An open bar is more costly, plus it motivates individuals to get really drunk really quick -- something you wouldn't want. Instead, give some thought to purchasing beer, wine beverages, champagne, and lots of nonalcoholic refreshments in bulk. By shopping around, you should be able to get some very good deals. Are you aware you could serve the drinks yourself (like the buffet) for even higher savings?
