Whilst I was a child it was my job to jump out of the automobile and open the drive gates for my mom and dad. Those were the times before electric gates came on the market and a person had to manually open and close the drive gates and secure them with a good old-fashioned padlock. I recall having to leave the car come rainfall or shine, summertime or wintertime, for many years before my mum and dad had electric gates fitted.
Now that I'm an adult and a vehicle driver myself, I really value the usefulness of electric gates. As I'm alone in a car much of the time and have no-one to get out the vehicle and open the drive gatefor me, it's fantastic not to have to do it on my own. Moreover, an automatic gate-opening system is a great asset during freezing or rainy weather because you don't need to get out of the car to open or close the drive gate.
Besides, situations have changed and it's not safe to leave your car to manually unlock a gate. A lot of hijackings occur in close proximity to home, especially when a car is stationary outside the drive gates. If there ever happened to be a cause to install electric gates, the threat of hijacking is it. An automatic entryway enables the motorist to stay inside the vehicle and in control of it constantly so that, if any suspect people approach the car, the driver can reverse the vehicle and drive away to the nearest cop station.
If you do not have an automated gate system fitted or in the event that the electric gate-opening system isn't functioning for whatever cause, then you need to be very careful when stepping out of your car to open your drive entrance. If you do not have a child or toddler in the vehicle then it's acceptable to get out while the engine is running, but if there is, then you need to at all times stop the engine and take the ignition key with you when you open the gate. You certainly don't want a hijacker to gain access to your car while your back is turned and drive off with your child in the car.
However, regardless of whether your home has working electric gates or not, you should always be aware of suspicious-looking individuals loitering in the street. If you see anyone who appears even the slightest bit suspect it's always better to continue on down the street without stopping or turning into your driveway. It isn't silly in a situation like this to tell the police because you might be saving yourself, as well as your neighbours, from possible hijacking.
When it comes to leaving your residence, you should be equally cautious when leaving your entrance. Always close an electric gate behind you with the remote control and wait for it to completely shut before driving away. It doesn't take long to travel down the road and turn a corner, leaving the entrance wide open for criminals to go in. By waiting for the gate to shut you can be certain that a) nobody has accessed your residence through an open gate and b) that the gate has, in fact, closed as it could breakdown and stay wide open.
