There Is Social Marketing And Then There's Social Marketing

There has been much confusion around the term social marketing. There are actually 2 different concepts for the term - there is the on-line promoting notion as well as the commercial advertising concept. True, both are to do with firm advertising and marketing but they're implemented quite differently.

The field of social marketing first came about early in the 1970's. It originally was used by commercial marketers to shape how society worked. In essence marketing a far better social structure. An excellent instance of this is the HIV/Aids awareness campaigns that are going on all over the world. The general thought is to make people aware of the dangers of certain behaviours and to replace them with safer, far more desirable behaviours.

The basis of any social marketing scheme, be it internet related or not, is to listen to the target audience and provide them with what they want. In terms of the HIV/Aids programmes spoken about earlier, the concept is that persons want to be safe but need to be told how and why and from what they must be safe.

The concept was taken by internet marketing men and women and put into action in a much more commercial manner, profiting a business by gaining additional customers. The medium for such social marketing is obviously the world wide web, and a lot more specifically, social networking sites.

The simple thought behind social marketing in on-line promotion is that the business builds a profile on a few social networking sites and maintains those profiles. These profiles are used to interact with all the potential clients at a much more individual level. It's in this way that large firms can learn what their shoppers want and decide if providing the product is worth the prospective added profit or not. They are able to also use the social networking interface to answer questions that consumers may perhaps have and even resolve issues. Although this seems as being a very good idea, it's incredibly time consuming.

This is where online advertising organizations try to take up the slack and make a quick buck during this process. It's not an ideal situation but most corporation owners do not have the time to maintain the social network profiles. So instead, they hire online promoting companies to monitor and maintain the profiles for them. Any sticky questions that come up are sent in to the individual in charge of advertising and marketing and also the answer posted. The amount to be paid will be dependent on how much work is put in.

Social marketing started out being a vehicle for implementing social change, but the thought was stolen and adapted by on-line marketers in next to no time. The basic notion of listening to the target population and trying to implement what they truly want remains the same, the principal difference is that social marketing online is aimed at increasing profit and customer bases for organizations and the other kind of social marketing is intended to initiate social change for the better. The web version of social marketing does work, but it is extremely time consuming so be certain you're dedicated to the strategy if it's a strategy you decide to employ to promote your business.
