The choice of battery is an important consideration when you drive a car. Most cars use 12 V batteries but you will use 16 V batteries if you require higher power requirements. 16 V racing batteries were originally developed for motorbike and car racing applications and are much lighter and smaller than regular batteries. Fortunately, they can also be used on a regular street going cars without in any way affecting the noise level or the performance. They can pretty much be placed anywhere because they are not lead acid batteries and will not therefore leak or produce toxic gases. These sealed unit batteries can be purchased as a direct replacement for your existing battery.

However you must take into account the use to which you're going to put your 16 V racing battery. If you intend to use it purely for racing purposes and to keep the electrics of your car going during a race, weight is the most important consideration and some of the batteries made for this purpose are really lightweight. On the other hand, if you intend to use your 16 V racing battery for street use, you can find sealed unit batteries that will be heavier than pure racing batteries but will still save you a considerable amount of weight. These batteries will give you the right amount of power throughout the year and will be environmentally friendly to satisfy your green concerns.

The three most common types of batteries that you can choose from are as follows:
-LIPO batteries are relatively inexpensive, provide the right kind of power and are durable. However, extra precautions need to be taken for charging and storing these batteries because they can catch fire if handled carelessly.
-NIMH batteries can be used a couple of times a day but are comparatively heavy. They can often take a long time to charge and suffer from the "battery memory" effect.
-NiCad batteries are now old technology and lack adequate power for their weight. However they are sturdy and can survive careless handling. They are also subject to the "battery memory" effect.
