Though most cookbooks reel in the reader with unique and delicious recipes, few ever provide the meticulous details necessary to create perfection with their recipes. Count Diana Peacock's Good Home Baking as one of those few that appeals not only to the beginner in the kitchen, but also to more experienced cooks seeking to perfect their recipes.

What is truly special about Good Home Baking is the way that it caters to all levels. In fact, the author dedicates all of chapter one to "Baking Basics." Peacock emphasizes the importance of enjoying the learning process. She states, "Baking in all its forms is a great pleasure. Even if you have some disasters, they won't matter-after all, it's part of the learning process!"

Good Home Baking offers the many benefits of cooking at home. Not only is it often less expensive to bake popular items such as cakes, scones, and muffins at home, but also it is also healthier; it can become a way of life.

Countless cookbooks feature scores of recipes; however, there are few additional instructions, making them less than ideal for beginners. Peacock, however, outlines everything clearly and concisely, making it easy to understand for all of her readers. For example, in her possible ingredients section, she lists "Flour." She then proceeds to describe the three types of flour (e.g., plain, self-raising, and strong) and when it is appropriate to use each type.

Diana Peacock supplements her list of recipes with advice and options, allowing readers the freedom to experiment and potentially create something more unique and tantalizing. Moreover, Peacock supplies readers with a "My Notes" section at the end of each chapter. Here, the readers can make notes about their recipes and list any adjustments they made. Ultimately, there are recipes for myriad baked goods: fruit and nut cakes, chocolate cakes, muffins, tray bakes, biscuits, scones, meringues, tea breads, and all kinds of pastries.

All in all, Diana Peacock's Good Home Baking focuses on the "how" of baking, taking guesswork out of kitchen, while offering scrumptious recipes. It provides crystal-clear instructions and her recipes are easy to follow for those who enjoy baking at any level. I recommend this to all baking and cooking aficionados; it's a must read!
