Hints For Learning English As Second Language

For anyone contemplating learning English as second language, you need to be aware that it takes time, effort and money. The exact amounts will depend upon you and your learning aptitude. There are many different ways to learn and again it depends upon you as to which is best for your purposes. But whichever method or combination of methods you choose, there is no short-cut unless you are very gifted.

Probably the most popular and most comprehensive way is by taking lessons. These can be intensive or regular. On average, it takes one academic year to learn one level of English, and about seven years in all are required to go from beginner to proficiency.

Lessons mean a considerable financial outlay over time. While class lessons are the cheapest form, one usually has to buy the course books as well. It is possible to have one-to-one private lessons, but this costs several times the amount of attending a class. The advantage of private tuition is that it can often be done at your home or place of work, whereas class lessons take place at the location of the language school.

If you decide on lessons, while it is possible to do them online, or even by distance learning, attending a school in person is best. When choosing a school, always look for one that is accredited to a central overseeing organization. While this doesn't mean that other schools are no good, it does guarantee you certain standards of teaching.

The advantage of learning at a school is that you get to practice speaking and hearing English as it is spoken by native speakers. You also get plenty of writing practice, and your pronunciation can be corrected. When you learn online, by distance or teaching yourself, these elements are missing.

Attending a school means making time in your schedule to go two or three times a week for a year. It is a big commitment, so be sure you can keep it up. If you have private lessons, there is often more flexibility, but if you start cancelling too often, you may lose the urge to keep going. Also, the teacher may decide to give up on you if he or she decides you are not serious about your aims.

Learning at home by oneself is an option, but it does have limitations. You have to be very self-disciplined to complete the tasks in hand, and it can get very lonely. Furthermore, there is no one to ask when you have queries and doubts. While one can undoubtedly learn a lot of grammar and vocabulary this way, the lack of practice makes it very difficult to converse in public, as the fluency develops much slower.

Individual circumstances will dictate which method you choose, but remember that learning anything is easier when it is enjoyable, so choose the method that you enjoy the most. Ideally, any formal learning needs to be followed up with extra practice, so trips to a country where English is spoken are recommended. So, too, is watching television programs and films. And don't forget to listen to the radio and read books, albeit at a simplified level to begin with.
