Beadwork stretches back to the start of man, and it is common from one culture to the next. As soon as someone took a vine, stripped the leaves off, found an old shell with a hole in it, and threaded it in, beading was born.
The reasons may differ from one culture to another. Perhaps someone thought the shell was pretty and planned to put it on. Could have been it was an extraordinary shell, treasured by the people, and it was used for power. Perhaps the idea of an oyster making a pearl reminded them of their offspring and so they carried it to respect their fertility gods. Whatever the reason, the result had been the same, a mastered skill which ended up with some stunning pieces of beadwork art.
In modern society so much of what we see is machined, that is to say, somebody programed a machine with a pattern, and that is turned out in large quantities with computerized accuracy. But so much of the life of a piece disappears that way. Even if an artisan, hand made the same design with the same color beads 10 times, each would be subtly different, making it possible for the landlord to truly have a wholly exclusive piece to call their own.
