Defensive driving can prevent accidents and lead to big savings on insurance. Following some simple tips, can help you prevent dealing with hazards on the road that may lead to expensive repairs, collision shop visits and even totaling your vehicle.

Who Are Defensive Drivers?

Defensive drivers are alert and look for advanced cues to try and recognize potentially hazardous situations sufficiently. This allows them time to safely maneuver their vehicle because they are on guard in the event that other drivers make an error.

Construction Zone Driving

It is almost that time of year where orange barrels start appearing on roads and highways near you. There are many ways to drive safe through these zones. Following these rules and obeying the law can keep you and those around you safe. It can also help avoid those costly tickets.

* Be prepared when you are entering a construction zone, pay attention to the signs that will instruct you when a lane is ending.
* Always have two hands on the wheel; this is especially important when entering construction zones.
* Look for speed limit signs, obeying these will keep the road workers safe and will save you from heavy fines and tickets. Don't forget fines double in construction zones.

Lane Usage

The most important rule in lane usage is to maintain a safe following distance. Try to ensure that if the driver in front of you slams on their brakes, you can avoid a collision.
* Scan thoroughly before changing speed or direction
* Keep an eye on your mirrors
* Assume the driver in front of you doesn't know you are passing, the driver may pull to the left to pass a vehicle in front or make a left turn
* Do not take unnecessary risks and if in doubt, do not pass
* Stay in your lane and do not veer into the next lane if you have to stop suddenly
o This can cause you to swerve into a car and cause others to veer or slam on their brakes

While Turning

Safe drivers realize that many accidents happen while making a turn because of all the variables that leave them vulnerable: cross traffic, pedestrians, traffic lights and signs, road conditions and the speed entering the turn.

* Be careful that improper tracking does not cause the vehicle to interfere with pedestrians and other vehicles when turning
* Approach the intersection assuming that cross traffic may not obey traffic control and anticipate the need for avoidance
* Reduce speed before entering a turn or curve
o If you enter too fast, you may not have enough time to slow down before losing control and even rolling your vehicle
* In reduced traction or visibility conditions, increase following distance enough to avoid a rear-end collision if other driver brakes hard

Savings from Defensive Driving

Defensive drivers pay close attention of what is ahead, giving them advance warning of approaching hazards and time to react to different situations. Defensive drivers should also see a huge savings in their future as well.

There are different insurance companies that reward safe drivers with offers of lower rates and even giving back already paid money for a year without any driving offenses. Getting in an accident leads to big increases in your car insurance, along with the cost of tickets. If you like saving money then be on the defense and drive safe.
