Tracy Morgan might be sidelined from a few 30 Rock episodes this March due to a kidney transplant, but the comedian isn't letting surgery stop him from taking his show on the road. In late December 2010, a rep for Morgan told E! Online, "Tracy is doing well and taking some much needed time to recover after the surgery." The source added that he "is looking forward to going back to work after the holidays."
According to a source close to the NBC series, Morgan and his character Tracy Jordan will be absent from two episodes of 30 Rock this season. His absence will be explained by some sort of "happy news," like (spoiler alert!) Jordan is off celebrating his anticipated Golden Globe win in some exotic setting.
The Emmy Award-winning comedy 30 Rock is told through the hilarious voice of Tina Fey (who formerly manned the Weekend Update news desk on Saturday Night Live) as Liz Lemon. 30 Rock also features Alec Baldwin as a top network executive named Jack Donaghty, Tracy Morgan as the erratic star of Lemon's smash variety show TGS with Tracy Jordan, Jane Krakowski as the co-star of TGS as well as Jenna Maroney and other colorful characters. 30 Rock is also known for its impressive batch of guest stars, including Elaine Stritch, Will Arnett, Carrie Fisher, former Vice President Al Gore, John McEnroe, Molly Shannon and Matt Damon.
Before his days on 30 Rock, Morgan was a cast member of Saturday Night Live. The New York native joined the cast in 1996 and quickly garnered fame (and lots of laughs) for his impersonations of Cuba Gooding Jr., Maya Angelou, Tito Jackson, Star Jones, Mike Tyson, Busta Rhymes, Mr. T, Reggie White and More. The stand-up comedian and sketch-comedy player also played recurring characters on SNL, like Bronx resident Dominican Lou, Tate Witherspoon of the trash-talking law firm Russell & Tate and Good Morning with Liza! sidekick Captain Munclair Vanderhousen III.
Although he's busy on the small screen, Morgan has appeared on the big screen in films like Half Baked, A Thin Line Between Love and Hate and more. Morgan is also slated to appear in the forthcoming film The Son of No One alongside Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Katie Holmes, Ray Liotta and Juliette Binoche. Written and directed by Dito Montiel, The Son of No One will make its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Set in post-9/11 New York City, the film tells the story of a pair of men forced to relive two murders they committed when they were young.
On the other end of the film spectrum, Morgan joins Will.i.am, Jesse Eisenberg, George Lopez, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann and Jamie Foxx in doing voice-overs for the upcoming animated movie Rio. Set to hit the big screen in April 2011, the movie is about a rare bird named Blu whose owner learns that her bird is the last male of its kind. Blu is moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil so he can create a third bird with the last female of his kind in this family-friendly flick.
