One of the most neglected parts of a car is the windshield wipers. Windshield wipers are depended on for safe travel during the worst of weather conditions and yet they are often not properly maintained so that they can effectively perform this function.

Too many blades are allowed to get severely cracked, split, torn, brittle, worn before they are replaced. Most people do not replace their wipers until they are caught in a storm and their wipers do not perform the job of wiping the windshield properly.

However, this is too late to replace the wipers. By putting off the replacement of the wipers until you are in a dangerous storm is putting yourself and your passengers in danger.

Good driving depends on your ability to see the road clearly. If you cannot do this, then you should not be driving.

During a storm you are not only bombarded with heavy rain or snow, but fog and mist are often present. It can be hard enough to see through the fog and mist properly without your wipers doing a poor job of clearing the snow and rain.

Wipers that make weird noises definitely also need to be replaced. Not only are they not working properly when they make odd noises, but they are causing damage to your windshield.

A windshield is much more costly to replace than the wipers. Wipers that make noise are often scratching the window and they will make permanent scratches along the path of movement.

These cracks will get worse and worse until the windshield shatters, which can be quite dangerous, if you do not replace it. In general, these safety devices should be replaced every six to twelve months depending on what the weather is like and how heavily they are used.

Wiper blades are made out of rubber, which does not last forever, particularly when it is being rubbed against something. Sunlight can also damage your wiper blades over time.

Even if a car sits unused for a long period of time, the wipers may need replaced because of this. When these blades age due to the elements, they will probably lose their flexibility and their ability to provide a cleanly wiped window.

A good way to check to see if your wiper blades are still good is to use your wiper fluid and then use your wipers. If streaks or noise is present as they perform this task, then they need to be replaced.

It is much better to check this way, before the next storm hits your safety is compromised. In addition, you will be able to check to make sure your washer fluid system still works.

If it does not work, the nozzles may be plugged with dirt. This is easy to fix as you can easily clean out the nozzles.

If the problem still is not fixed, you may want to check the hoses for kinks or clogs. In addition, you may need to adjust where the washer fluid is sprayed on the windshield.

Sometimes the nozzles can get bumped so that they do not cover the whole windshield. The pump may also need some work if it does not apply enough fluid or force with each squirt.

However, you may simply need to refill the pump with washer fluid as well. This system should undergo regular maintenance as it is critical that it also works so that you can properly see when your windshield gets dirty.

If you have a rear wiper, be sure to check and replace that one quite often as well. Some people properly take care of their front wipers, but forget about the back one.

Replacement blades can be found in a lot of different locations. Local mechanics, lube and oil services, and department stores may all have blades that are appropriate for your car.

This is a simple replacement that you can do yourself, so you will not have to pay a large bill for a mechanic to do it. It is cheaper to simply replace the blades instead of the entire wiper if you are looking to save money.

However, if the plastic is cracked or broken, the entire wiper will need to be replaced. If you are replacing the entire thing, you will need to make sure that the replacement has the same length and claw width as the previous version that was on your car so that your windshield gets properly cleaned each time that you use your new wipers.
