When shopping for a new furnace what should be considered? Well the first thing is energy efficiency because nobody is going to want to pay high electric bills. Also there is the environmental aspect to consider. The cleaner a unit burns the better; this goes for Mother Nature to children growing up breathing the air.
With that said there are three different types available on the market today. Beginning with Electric models, these are inexpensive to install and maintain however they are quite costly to use. The next version is one that runs on oil. This model is less expensive to run however does not burn cleanly, so from an environmental point of view they really are not a good option. Finally there are units that run on gas. These models operate on either propane or natural gas. This type of is not only good for the environment it is also nice on the old checkbook. Gas units operate at an AFUE level of 90 percent or higher. AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency which translates into higher the AFUE percentage, the less it will cost to run the furnace.
Now that we have a grasp on the different types of units available, let us talk about the companies that offer them and what are the best units available on the market. There are a few big name brands available for competitive prices. One can purchase these from hardware stores such as Home Depot or Lowes or they can be purchased directly from the manufacturer. The decision of where to purchase the unit is a personal preference.
Let us talk about the companies themselves. The oldest company and one of the pioneers in the heating unit market is Lennox. Established in 1895 Lennox has been designing new technologies for over two decades. During this time they have established themselves as one of the top manufacturers of heating and cooling technologies in the industry. The models offered through Lennox have an AFUE rating of 80 percent to 98.2 percent.
The next company that we are going to talk about is Trane. The Trane Company was incorporated in 1913 by father and son James and Reuben Trane. In 1923 Reuben invented the convector radiator which established the company as an innovator. Living up to the title of being an innovator in the heating industry, Trane has started incorporating integrated controls into their heating units that allow a person to adjust the controls from a cell phone remotely. The models that are offered come in oil and gas run units. The AFUE percentages range from 82.7 percent to 85 percent for the oil burning units and only get better in regards to the gas units which have an AFUE rating of 80 percent to 96.7 percent.
Rheem was established in the 1920s and began manufacturing space heaters and oil furnaces in the 1940s, which introduced them to a new market. Ever since they entered the heating market, Rheem has become a top end manufacturer of both residential and commercial heating and cooling systems. By offering competitive rates along with units that have an AFUE rating of 80 to 95 percent makes this company one of the leading companies in the heating industry.
Goodman is a fairly young company in comparison to the first three we talked about. Founder Harold Goodman was an air conditioning contractor whom saw the need for inexpensive high quality equipment and so he started his own company. During its time this company started out manufacturing air conditioning units and later entered the heating side of the business. Since then they have become one of the top manufacturers offering furnace systems that have AFUE rating of up to 80 percent for their standard efficiency models and 92.1 to 95 percent for their high efficiency line.
In conclusion when shopping for the right heating device can be a daunting task. Review the different types of units in order to find the best fit. Also keep in mind the efficiency of the models as this will affect monthly costs and air emissions.
