When you are pregnant, your number one concern is caring for and taking the proper precautions to protect your unborn child. While exercising is definitely good for the mother and child, there are some exercises that should be practiced and others that should not.

Many women like to perform sit ups and crunches in between pregnancies to get their stomach back into shape. They worry that if they get pregnant again they will accidentally damage the new fetus by doing this activity unknowingly.

However, sit ups and crunches are perfectly okay to do during the first trimester. At that point, you will need to stop doing sit-ups and crunches, as well as lying on your back.

By lying on your back, the weight of the uterus could restrict the flow of blood to the uterus. As a result you would be depriving your baby of oxygen, but it is lucky for you that sit ups will probably be impossible at this point anyway.

Another activity that some women greatly enjoy, but are disappointed when they are told they should not do it is skating. The problem with skating is balance.

Your stomach is going to grow so quickly, that you are not going to be used to maneuvering its weight without falling over on occasion. If you fall over past your first trimester, the baby will be very vulnerable to your weight and the impact of the fall.

In addition, you could be seriously injured and your pregnancy could be at risk. Roller skating and figure skating are definitely off limits for pregnant women.

Another activity that is probably not a good idea to participate in is skiing. Skiing is particularly dangerous for you and your child in your third trimester.

Not only can there be a lot of falling involved, but the heavy strain of trying to keep your balance can cause you to go into labor early. You do not want to risk your child in any way.

Some women prefer to go bicycling when pregnant. After the first trimester, it is not a good idea to bike on a mobile bike.

However, you can bike safely on a stationary bicycle. The bumping up and down on a mobile bike can cause you to bleed among other problems.

In addition, another issue of biking is your sense of balance. Remember that one fall could serious hurt yourself or your baby.

Running is also recommended against because of the pressure that the extra weight of your stomach will put on your joints. The up and down motion can also cause you to bleed and you are at greater risk for tripping and falling when running rather than walking.

When you are pregnant, the primary goal of exercise is to maintain a certain level of fitness. Instead of running on your treadmill, slow it down and begin walking on it.

You can get many benefits from walking on your treadmill too. In addition, you will be less likely to go into early labor before you are supposed to.

Contact sports are also recommended against because of the impact that they can have on the baby. In addition, you should be careful about exercising not too vigorously when you are in your third trimester.

Any activity you do too vigorously will cause oxygen to be taken away from the baby and given to your muscles. This can stunt growth and it can result in complications or even death.

It is better to avoid working out vigorously or doing anything that could result in falling or impact. However, many women do enjoy dancing while pregnant.

Dancing can get the heart beat up as well as improve your mood as you listen to the upbeat music. You do want to make sure that you do not leap, twirl, or do any lifts though.

Perhaps the best activity for pregnant women to participate in is swimming. The chemicals will not harm you or the baby and it is a great way to remove the weight from your back and feet.

In addition, you will be able to float in the water and use all of your muscles when you swim around. This exercise is also good for your lungs and your heart.

On the other hand, gymnastics should be avoided at all costs. This activity is a combination of elements that spell disaster for pregnant women.

You can stretch in order to remain flexible, but that is about the extent of gymnastics that you should participate in. Balance is most definitely not your high point when you are pregnant.
