Nuts and bolts are utilized in a variety of functions such as automotive, kitchen appliances and construction industry. Nuts and bolts are also used in DIY furniture that doesn't require the use of nails. This furniture can be joined by the buyer itself without the help of carpenters because it can easily be assembled with the use of nuts and bolts.

Nuts are small hexagonal-shaped pieces of metal fasteners. These may be made of steel, aluminum alloy or brass. To prevent rusting, these may have non-corrosive metal plating. There are a lot of varieties of nuts depending on its uses. These are Clip-on nut, cap nut or acorn nut, J-nut which is also called U-nut, cross dowel, Rivet nut (blind nut), Nut-type MJT, Self-aligning nut, Plate nut or nut plate, welded or staked nut for plastic, PEM nut , Internal wrenching/ Allen nut, T-nut, weld nut, T-slot nut, Swage nut, blind nut, Sex bolt, insert nut, well nut, coupling nut, knurled nut, split nut, T-groove, square nut, panel nut, wing nut, hexagonal nuts, flange nuts or collar nuts, lug nut, barrel nut, slotted nut, crushed nut, thumb nut, slotted nut, and cage nut.

Bolts on the other hand are threaded fasteners. It has a head and a metal cylinder which matches the nut. A stud bolt however doesn't have a head and so you thread it with nuts on both ends. Like nuts, bolts are made of various materials such as brass, bronze, aluminum alloy and steel. Classification of bolts would be according to diameter, type of head, material, length and type of head. These may be plated with stainless metals also to prevent it from corroding and rusting. Plating is either made of copper or cadmium. Bolt diameter can be measured by measuring the distance across it. Bolt pitch is the quantity of threads in one inch. Bolt head type is based on the shape of its head; hexagonal, flat, square round or others. The distance from the end up to its head is its length. Bolt examples are eye bolts, lag bolts, hex bolts, U-bolts, and carriage bolts.

Unlike nails and screws, nuts and bolts fit through a hole that is larger than the long part of the bolt but smaller than the head part. Nuts and bolts are intended in a way that it attaches through a "screwing" system, where the bolt perfectly fits and turn well into the nut's indention. Nuts and bolts are specifically made for each other and cannot be interchanged. Their strength is determined by measuring the grade of the alloy. Measurement for nuts and bolts is either metric sizing or standard sizing they are very convenient ways of fastening two pieces because it can be easily done and that it can even fasten the two pieces securely. Nuts and bolts are also easy to use because it won't take a hard time to take the two pieces apart by unscrewing the nut from the bolt.
