One of the biggest questions you must answer when you are going to travel somewhere by air is whether you will arrange a ride to the airport or whether you will park your car in the long term airport parking lot.
There are many things you should consider about long term airport parking. Usually this is a fairly safe option as security is usually on top of things.
However, there are several safety precautions you should take if you are going to park your car in the parking lot. Some of these things will help make sure that you can get in your car and go home when you return from your trip as well.
The first thing you will want to do once you arrive at the airport is disconnect the battery to your car. Make sure you know how to do this properly so that you do not electrocute yourself.
By disconnecting the battery you are ensuring that the power does not drain out of it while you are gone. If the battery completely drains while you are gone on an extended trip you will not be able to start your car when you are ready to use it to go home.
Instead you will have to beg the assistance of someone else who also wants to simply go home to jump your car. This will make your life much easier upon return and it is a task that only takes a minute to complete before you run off to catch your plane.
The second thing you will want to make sure you do is get your tires fully inflated right before you park. Most tires have slow leaks which if allowed to leak for a long period of time will result in a flat tire.
You do not want to return to your car to find your means of transportation home has flat tires. A perfect vacation can be ruined by this discovery.
The third thing you should make sure you do is place an ice scraper in the car. Even if it is summer this is a good idea if your trip is going to take several months.
Again, when you return to your car you do not want to have to wait for it to warm up and thaw the ice. You will want to be able to simply take off and go home.
The best way to do this is to store an ice scraper so you can take care of any potential ice that may be present on your car in a few minutes. In addition, the ice can build up over time if it is never allowed to fully melt.
On occasion this happens in certain long term airport parking lots. This will make the ice practically impossible to remove without an ice scraper.
You do not want anything to deal your return home once you are on your way. These three simple tips are easy to do and they do not take a whole lot of time.
In addition to car maintenance, there are also several other things you will want to make sure you do. For example, you will want to make sure that you make a reservation with the airport to park your car in the long term parking lot.
It is a good idea to visit the website of the airport before you make the call so that you are familiar with the prices and availability. You will want to make sure that the price of long term parking is within your vacation budget before you make a reservation.
Long term parking locations can be quite expensive and it may be more worthwhile to simply pay a taxi cab or van to haul you and your family to the airport. The first day may be only $33.00, but the addition of the next couple of days at $66.00 is not very appealing to most people.
The prices reflect the limited availability of long term parking stalls and the demand for them. Even if you still would rather drive your own car to the airport, you will probably want to consider offsite parking reservation combined with an airport shuttle to your departure terminal.
Offsite parking lots are generally much less expensive than other parking lots and the airport shuttle can take you right where you need to go anyway. Long term parking is usually very close to the airport itself, but you may or may not be close to your own terminal.
