A data logger is used to measure and monitor certain conditions. It is an electronic device that can measure temperature, humidity, voltage, light intensity, and pressure, among other things. These are the major conditions monitored.

If your need involves monitoring products during storage, transportation, or when distributing, then you need a stand-alone model. They have their own power source and readout, meaning no outside power or computer is necessary. This allows ongoing monitoring to maintain quality control of products.

These data devices can be found in a lot of different designs and sizes. This makes them appropriate for different uses. Governments, private businesses, and even the International Space Station make use of them. Their uses are almost unlimited. There are a huge number of device designs available, covering almost any use imaginable.

These instruments need calibration periodically. It is important to make sure the company you get yours from offers precise calibration. You might need on-site service, or in-house service may be adequate. Just make sure the calibration equipment is top of the line in order to get accurate calibration.

You need to get the optimum size for your needs. Smaller devices are more expensive due to having to compact them, but they may be a necessity for what you need them for. If you want to monitor a product during transportation, or if your product is small, you will need the smaller unit. If you can get by with a larger unit you will probably get a much better price.

There are several other things to consider when looking at getting a data logger. Some of these are whether to get an internal or external drive, the number of inputs you need to monitor, they type of input needed, the speed needed, the amount of memory required, and whether you require real time or stored monitoring. It is also important to determine if there is any special equipment needed to read the results if it is going to be used for transportation to another location, or whether the person on the other end of the shipment could just plug it into their computer.

What you are going to use the device for determines whether you need an external or internal sensor. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, but the ultimate use will determine which is best. Some consideration are speed of response, how the device will be positioned, the type information needed, and the how easy it will be to read the device in real time.

Sometimes a device is needed that will read multiple inputs at the same time. This will require a larger unit with much more memory. It will need to be connected to a USB port to be read and charted. This should be taken into consideration when choosing the device.

Input needs vary, and should be planned according to your needs. Some instruments can only read one type of input, and others can read a variety of inputs. Some of the inputs are voltage, state at a particular time, pressure, frequency, and level of a particular input.

To make a wise choice about a data logger, you much consider all the areas mentioned. Considerations such as cost, use of the device, design needed, type of input to be monitored, and how the results will be measured all need to be considered before choosing your unit.
