Concerted efforts have been made on a global scale to recycle as much garbage as possible. The Toronto waste management system has made remarkable improvements to combat this problem. As electronic equipment contains hazardous waste there are rules and regulations under which they will accept broken devices.
The city is very optimistic about future plans to convert landfill gas into electricity. Organic refuse releases a Biogas and currently work is being done to convert this into natural gas. Extensive research is also being conducted into plastic and porcelain diversion. These are just a few of the many projects that are taking place.
The ultimate goal or objective is to reuse everything and according to researchers this is quite possible. The benefits are enormous and diverting 70% of landfill waste saves a huge amount of electricity and drastically reduces air and water pollution. A significant reduction in eCO2 and greenhouse gas emissions can certainly have a major impact on the environment.
