Many of the toys available on the market for cats contain catnip. When presented with these toys the cats can have have hours of play. People are often amazed at how catnip effects cats but do not understand why.
Catnip is actually an herb which is a member of the mint family. This plant is grown throughout the world and originated in the Mediterranean area. It is now most common in North America, Canada and England. It grows very rapidly and produces leaves that contain oil which is extracted by crushing or cutting them open.
Most cats are attracted to the odor of the plant and especially enjoy a toy that has had the catnip oil added. However, for approximately 1/3 of cats there is no attraction at all and some that even become aggressive. Available in toys, its seeds can also be given to the animals to eat but this should be done in moderation. Sprays are also available to put on scratching posts which teaches them to avoid clawing the furniture.
It is possible to purchase this product in bulk, or grow the plant and make toys for the cat or cats. A number of people do this as it makes it easy to discard toys that become soiled or in disrepair. When bought in bulk it is easily kept fresh in the refrigerator or freezer. Another benefit is the beautiful white flowers the plant displays in the garden.
Some sources state that the plant is related to marijuana which may be why some of these animals get such a high when playing with a toy containing the product. Used all over the world it is stated that there are at least 250 different kinds of catnip plants available.
There is a rather standard procedure that the majority of these animals go through when first encountering the product. It is sniffing, rubbing and licking that gives a feeling of euphoria. This feeling lasts only five or ten minutes and then wears off. Some cats will eat catnip which will then act as a sedative.
Catnip is not harmful to felines or to humans. Strangely enough it has been prescribed to treat a number of human ailments such as flatulence, stomach pains, nervousness and others. It has also been chewed for toothaches, used as cough medicine and drank as tea.
Catnip is normally inhaled by the animals from its toys so they cannot obtain too much and become ill. They love the smell and it triggers their senses to make them feel very happy and playful. This product should not be used on kittens and is usually not too effective with older cats.
