For generations the humble Glasgow pub has been an essential part of this amazing town. Whereas in other parts of the country, the pub is simply a place to go and get drunk in, in Glasgow the pub takes on a much more significant role.These pubs weave into the very fabric of the city itself and many are popular landmarks in their own right. Some have achieved cult status and , even though the city elders might not like to admit it, they are as important to the heritage as its cathedrals, galleries and civic buildings. In the past they have been the meeting place of choice for local folk and barons of industry equally, like the well-known Glasgow tobacco lords. Bars such as Sloans, which is right in the heart of the city have been around for over 300 years, which makes them some of the earliest establishments in the city.
However, its not all been a bed of roses for Glasgow pub managers. Following World War 2, the city authorities set out on an extensive plan of redevelopment in an attempt to clear the city of its legendary tenements and provide better quality housing for its population. A large part of this urban redevelopment included demolishing the notorious tenements in locations such as the Gorbals and updating them with contemporary high rise flats that included such luxuries as inside toilets. Unfortunately, around this time, it wasn't only the tenements that got the heave-ho - several of Glasgow's oldest pubs also had to make way in the name of progress. Pubs with excellent names like The Mucky Duck as well as the New Era Bar were, regretfully, lost and never re-established. It was a time of great growth and also great sadness, and a lot of people lamented the passing of some old established favorites.
Although many a Glasgow pub met its doom in that period, you can still find lots of them still in existence. In a few countries, beer drinking is practically a nationwide sport.
