The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also links perc to kidney and liver damage. Another chemical, naphthalene, a solvent manufactured from coal tar, is considered toxic to the human central nervous system and a possible carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Carpet cleaning chemicals get into the air of a room when applied during cleansing, and can also be ingested by kids who play on the floor soon afterwards. Besides such on-site health threats, floor cleaning chemicals can pollute local groundwater if disposed of improperly.
Wastewater from carpet cleansing requires treatment and/or filtration in order to neutralize contaminants. Thanks to growing awareness about the potential health impacts of carpet cleaning, a new breed of professional services has sprung up that eschews dangerous and polluting chemicals in favor of more natural solutions.
Some of the newer and more green-friendly cleansing solutions used by professional services are plant instead of chemical based. Most floor cleaning services are local businesses, and many have greened-up their processes in recent years.
If you need your carpets cleaned you should call around and ask questions. If a service doesn't know whether their cleansing solution is plant or chemical based, or if they don't have systems in place to treat or transport wastewater responsibly after cleaning, they should probably be avoided.
A few chains also stand out for their commitment to more natural carpet cleansing operations. Some companies use carbonating cleansing bubbles instead of harsh chemicals to remove dirt from carper fibers.
The companies claim to use a fraction of the water of other services and avoid harmful detergents, solvents and enzymes. Keeping floors clean to begin with is one way to minimize the need for too many professional cleansings.
The green living website suggests spot cleaning carpet stains with a homemade non-toxic solution consisting of equal parts white vinegar and water. The solution can be sprayed onto spots and then sponged up a few minutes later in combination with warm soapy water.
Meanwhile, hardier stains might warrant an overnight treatment with a paste made from salt, borax and vinegar, which can be vacuumed up the next morning. Carpet cleaners don't have to be expensive to work well.
In fact, they don't even have to be bought in a store. Make up your own spot remover and steam cleansing solutions, and enjoy clean floors for less.
Mix white vinegar and baking soda together to form a paste. Then, work the paste into the carpet spot with an old toothbrush, or something similar.
Allow the paste to dry; then vacuum up the baking soda, and the spot should be gone. Some stains may need to be treated more than once.
Fill the machine with equal parts white vinegar and warm water; then, clean according to the manufacturer's instructions. The acetic acid in vinegar dissolves stains and also neutralizes odors.
Some benefits of cleaning with vinegar are that it is inexpensive, safe for use around pets and kids, no harsh chemicals, and it is an effective sanitizer, deodorizer, and spot remover. For light to medium stains, mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar 1 one cup of warm water.
Lightly spray the area, wait a few minutes and blot with paper towels. Ammonia and warm water is another solution.
For difficult stains, mix 1/4 cup of salt, 1/4 cup of borax and 1/4 cup of white vinegar. Rub the paste into the carpet.
Leave it for two to three hours and then vacuum. To deodorize and clean the floor, first vacuum.
Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet. Leave it for two to three hours and then vacuum.
To clean the whole floor, mix 1/4 cup of dish detergent and a gallon of water. Using a brush, clean small areas and blot up the excess with paper towels or a clean white cloth.
Let it dry and then vacuum. Club soda is carbonated water, and it works on light to medium stains that are recent.
Dribble the soda onto the spot being careful not to saturate the area. Blot the area with paper towels or a clean white cloth.
