You may not know her by name, but you likely know Anjelah Johnson because of her hilarious nail salon routine! Johnson's show That's How We Do It was released last year, but Gather.com reports that Comedy Central recently aired the show, introducing a whole new audience to her nail salon bit and other hilarious anecdotes. In her nail salon routine, Johnson plays Tammy, a Vietnamese nail salon lady. Johnson's nail salon video is a monster hit on YouTube-it has scored more than 18 million views-but her comedy career is just heating up.
A native of San Jose, Calif., Anjelah Johnson was named Rookie of the Year while working as a professional cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders. The 28-year-old of Mexican and Native American descent garnered recognition for her viral video "Nail Salon" and abandoned cheerleading to try comedy full time. After that sidesplitting clip got her noticed, she appeared as a series regular on MADtv during the show's 13th season and spawned another Internet hit, "Bon Qui Qui." Johnson earned an ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) nomination for Outstanding Female Performance for her work on MADtv largely due to the hilarious character Bon Qui Qui, who is a rude fast food employee!
After conquering television, Anjelah Johnson launched her film career, appearing as a live action character in the movie Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel alongside Jason Lee and the voices of Anna Faris, Amy Poehler and Justin Long. This year, Johnson starred in Our Family Wedding, playing the feisty sister of America Ferrera. Our Family Wedding, which also stars Carlos Mencia, Regina King and Oscar-winning actor forest Whitaker, is a comedy about two very different families coming together for a wedding. Also in 2010, Johnson lent her voice to the animated film Marmaduke, which also features the voices of Jeremy Piven, Owen Wilson and Emma Stone.
In an interview with The Comic's Comic, Johnson revealed that she launched her comedy career at an improv class in an unlikely location-her church! "I took an improv class at my church. Every Tuesday night they do a creative arts function at the church, acting classes, singing, art, everything ... I know I had some friends in the class. I don't even know what prompted me to go in that direction. They had the acting class. I was in that, and then they said we have an improv class, OK, I'll try that," explained Johnson. She may have started her stand up career on a whim, but after hitting the big time with Bon Qui Qui and nail salon, she is here to stay!
Although Anjelah Johnson has a budding film and television career-most recently, she appeared on Lopez Tonight-she still performs stand up on tour, and fans can get Anjelah Johnson tickets to see her this fall. Johnson has a string of dates lined up in the Lone Star State and will likely tack on dates outside of Texas later this fall. Johnson's stand up routine is full of stories about growing up in a traditional Mexican-American home. Aside from comedy, Johnson also has a promising voice that may see her trying her hand at a recording career in the near future.
