Figuring out what you need to know about self storage in winter time can be a hassle but clearing up those summer items from your living space can free up an enormous amount of space. However some serious damage could occur if the proper precautions are not taken.

When placing items into seasonal storage it is important to walk through the home and gather any items that you do not think you will use during the winter season. Outdoor toys and furniture, maybe even an automobile. Place these items aside and categorize them into separate piles.

Now that everything is organized, take the time to go over each item and make any necessary repairs to them. Most wooden items can be fixed with a nail or two, while plastic items may require a bit of adhesive. This step is important because it saves time when removing the items from storage by allowing you to put the item into use directly.

It is also important to thoroughly clean each item before putting it away. Wash all your summer clothes before putting them in plastic bags. Clean any furniture and wrap it with plastic. Make sure any bugs and dirt are removed from outdoor items. Some people might prefer to wrap their items in cloth blankets, as this allows the wrappings to breathe, creating less condensation inside the wrapping, which could damage items. If long term storage is desired, a climate controlled unit may be necessary.

When storing an automobile it is important to change the oil and check the air filters. Then top off the gas tank and add a stabilizer if desired. If the gas tank is not full, condensation will develop. Take out the battery and connect it to a trickle charger as they will lose their charge if not used for long periods. Also wash and wax the vehicle so that it is nice and shiny when taken out.

When the automobile is actually being put into storage, place either a mat on the ground, or put the car up on blocks. Putting the car up can relieve pressure on the tires and hopefully prevent dry rot. Make sure the parking brake is released as well, when the brake is applied for a long time it will stick to the rotors. Now plug the exhaust with something like steel mesh. This prevents pests from making a nest in the car. Place a note on the steering wheel if necessary to remind you to remove the blockage.

Lastly make sure that the windows are cracked, the airflow will help the interior stay fresh smelling. You may use a car cover if you wish but it should not be required if it is already an indoor storage facility. The alarm should also be disabled as well as the car should be safe enough as it is.

It takes a lot of work to make sure your items are stored properly but if these simple steps are followed, almost anything should be able to be stored for extended periods of time. Most of these quick and easy steps are just about all of what you need to know about self storage in winter time and following them could save an enormous amount of money in the long term.
