Comedian Jim Gaffigan may be better known as the Hot Pocket Guy than for his film roles, but that may change as he has a role in one of fall's most highly-anticipated romantic comedies, Going the Distance. The film opened Sept. 3 and stars Drew Barrymore (as Erin) and her on-and-off-again beau Justin Long (as Garrett) as a couple trying to make a long distance relationship work.
In Going the Distance, Gaffigan plays Phil, the husband of Christina Applegate's character Corinne, Erin's sister. Rumor has it that one of the funniest moments in the movie occurs when Applegate and Gaffigan engage in some loud, shall we say, marital affairs!
Just because Jim Gaffigan has a role in one of fall's biggest romantic comedies doesn't mean that he has turned his back on standup! Fans can get Jim Gaffigan tickets to see him perform his hilarious standup routine in cities like Las Vegas, Nev.; Seattle, Wash.; Boston, Mass.; Phoenix, Ariz.; New York, N.Y. and Milwaukee, Wis. through New Year's Eve. Gaffigan has been making audiences laugh since scoring his big break on The Late Show with David Letterman and his current road trip is sure to be just as side-splitting.
It may seem as if Gaffigan was made for comedy, but it took him some convincing to think so! After earning a business degree from Georgetown University, Gaffigan started a career in finance before finally attempting a standup career at the urging of his friends. The Indiana native remains modest despite his success as a comedian, telling LoHud.com earlier this year (before his gig in New York's lower Hudson Valley), "The running joke in my family is that I'm third-funniest." If that's true, the Gaffigan must be one funny family!
Gaffigan's family does seep into his standup routine, and his sister Cathy even inspired the high-pitched, third-person voice he uses onstage when mocking himself-usually for his pale skin! Another regular shtick in Gaffigan's act is his commentary on the Hot Pocket.
Speaking about how the microwaveable treat wound up in his routine, Gaffigan told LoHud.com, "The Hot Pocket (routine) really as inspired by how amazingly bad those initial Hot Pocket commercials were, and how simple the product was, and how bad the name was. That was pure luck." Luck or not, it struck a chord with audiences and earned Gaffigan the title of the Hot Pocket Guy.
Along with Hot Pockets, Gaffigan is equally well-known for Pale Force, the series of animated short films he creates with fellow pale skinned funnyman Conan O'Brien. For those who haven't seen Pale Force, the duo's joint paleness becomes a superpower! It's that brand of observational humor that has allowed Gaffigan to thrive in the world of standup, but he credits his wife Jeannie (the couple has three kids) with a lot of his act. Gaffigan told CapeCodOnline.com that he and Jeannie (who has a background in sketch comedy) introduce new jokes "maybe over a glass of wine" before planning how they will be incorporated into his routine.
