Halloween is, arguably, the holiday when we have the most fun. We get to see our kids, and those of the neighborhood, all dressed up and having a ball, and we did not even have to buy a room full of toys!

Year by year, though, the costumes change, and it can be very hard to know which ones are the most popular.

This year, we have written an article just for you, so let us find the best kids Halloween costumes for 2010. Expounded on below are the classic costumes that will always be popular, as well as the more pop-culture versions that tend to change year by year.

Kids Halloween costumes change as the popular cartoons change, but there are a few standbys. Boys tend to favor pirates and cowboys, vampires and goblins. If your son is a cowboy kind of kid, you can make a quick Clint Eastwood by wrapping your child in a poncho and putting mascara on his face to resemble beard stubble.

Today, you can find pirate costumes to make your child look like Captain Jack, or maybe even Will Turner.

More classic costume ideas would be superheroes or their arch villains like Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Doc Oc, Lex Luther, and the Joker. Batman also had Two Face, Penguin, and The Riddler.

Girls, on the other hand, classically choose things like fairies, angels, and princesses. Some choose witches or vampires. Here again, you may find your daughter wanting to be a superhero, the Invisible Woman, perhaps.

On the other hand, if she is more of a villain, she may want to be Cat Woman. In this one category, your son and daughter may both want to be the same thing: Pirates. In this case, you can always have your daughter dress as Elizabeth Swan.

This year, much like any other, you will see many Halloween costumes for kids based on popular movies, cartoons, and even pop stars. Unlike other years, this year is probably going to tend more toward the absurd.

Cartoons like Sponge bob (every parent's yellow nemesis), Yo Gaba Gaba, and Avatar; the Last Airbender have become hugely popular. Within each of these are at least three costume options. There is also the mega hit Harry Potter series, as well as Toy Story and even Twilight.

Ironically, perhaps the most popular costume is one we remember from our childhoods: Sesame Street. Yes, children still want to dress as Big Bird or Oscar the Grouch. You can also choose from Iron Man, Despicable Me, and Alice in Wonderland. Avatar is big too, with the make-up laden blue faces and interesting outfits.

Aside from the always-popular movies and cartoons, your child may wish to dress as their favorite singer. Michael Jackson and Lady GaGa are popular this year, as are Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift.

Any of these costumes would be appropriate for a kids' Halloween party. They can all be made age-appropriate and safe for your child.

In a party setting, you should be sure the costume does not have too much extra fabric, which may trip him or her up when trying to do activities and it should allow freedom of movement in case your child needs to move quickly.

Try to find a costume that is comfortable; if it is not, your child may want to take it off before the trick or treating is done. Whatever you choose, the most important thing is that the costume be safe as well as your child's fantasy.

Have fun with the search, and make sure you and your child are both happy with the choice.
